A New Star Wars Trilogy Is In The Works, But It Might Not Be Part Of The The Skywalker Saga

A new trilogy of Star Wars movies are currently in development, at least according to Deadline. The site reported that Lucasfilm has already locked in a producer for the new project and it will be part of the The Skywalker Saga. Other insiders, however have disputed that, saying instead the trilogy will be part of a new saga separate from Episodes 1 through 9.

Deadline co-editor-in-chief wrote the following on Thursday:

I heard this will comprise episodes 10-12 of The Skywalker Saga that began with George Lucas’s 1977 first film that along with Steven Spielberg’s Jaws reshaped the global blockbuster game. Insiders disputed my intel that Kinberg will continue that storyline, saying this will instead begin a new saga, and sit alongside Star Wars percolating projects with James Mangold, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Taika Waititi and Donald Glover.

So, while it seems clear that Lucasfilm is definitely moving forward with some sort of new Star Wars trilogy that might form the nexus for other projects and spin-offs, whether that technically ends up being Episode 10, 11, and 12 remains up in the air. According to io9, the trilogy will be separate from the Skywalker arc, with a source describing the project as being in “early stages of development” and “the beginning of a new Star Wars saga designed to sit alongside the studio’s myriad other projects.”

The producer in charge of the new trilogy is reportedly Simon Kinberg, who was involved with several X-Men movies as well as Star Wars Rebels. According to Deadline, he will write and produce the new Star Wars movies with Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy.

While there’s no timeline yet for the new trilogy, it comes as the franchise enters a new era following late 2010s Force Awakens, Last Jedi, and The Rise of Skywalker movies and the early 2020s streaming TV blitz. While lots of other projects are percolating at the moment, including a spin-off starring Daisy Ridley’s Rey rebuilding the Jedi Order after Episode 9, it’s clear a malaise has fallen over the franchise with no core saga to help pull everything together.
